Anne Meis Knupfer received her Ph.D. in Cultural Foundations in 1992 from the University of Iowa. She has published three historical monographs which focus on women's activism and African-American urban communities in Chicago: Toward a Tenderer Humanity and a Nobler Womanhood: African American Women's Clubs in Turn-of-the-Century Chicago (New York University Press, 1996); Reform and Resistance, Gender, Delinquency, and America's First Juvenile Court (Routledge, 2001); and Women's Activism during the Chicago Black Renaissance (University of Illinois, November 2005). She is working on a book about the first female presidents of American colleges.
