Research Interests:

Dr. Cooky’s research interests include the sociological aspects of urban recreation sport programs for low-income minority girls; the role of popular culture and the media in shaping social understandings of gender and sport; the construction of gendered athletic identities among girls who play sport; and qualitative methods in sport.

Dr. Cooky has also started a new research line studying young women breast cancer survivors. Her current research projects include a content analysis of the media framing of the Don Imus incident, and a qualitative research study on survivorship among young women breast cancer survivors.She will also conduct follow-up interviews with the girl athletes she studied for her dissertation.
