NEW  STUDENT  PROFILES  --  Fall 2007

By John L. Larson, Director of Graduate Education

Becky Adamski recently graduated from University of Wisconsin-Platteville and is seeking an MA and PhD in global history at Purdue.  Becky is interested especially in Russian history and spent a semester studying in Moscow to prove it.  She will be working with Michael Smith.

Mary Barford holds a BA from the University of Illinois-Urbana/Champaign and an MA from Eastern Illinois.  She is seeking a PhD at Purdue specializing in twentieth-century American history with an emphasis on the spread of Spanish-speaking workers throughout the country.  She was awarded a Ross Fellowship; her advisor is Nancy Gabin.

Mauricio Castro is a native of Costa Rica and comes to Purdue with a BA from Vassar College in New York.  He is interested in intellectual history and popular culture (his past research ranges from film to comic books to Albert Speer’s urban planning).  His advisor is Randy Roberts.

Micah Childress earned his MA at Purdue last spring and returns for more punishment in the doctoral program.  Micah is an actual Hoosier, but he has made friends and done well in the program nevertheless.  Micah is working with Mike Morrison and/or John Larson, depending on which circus he selects for his major.

Ricky Collins is an undergraduate Purdue history major from northern Indiana who took his BA last spring.  He has sampled a wide variety of history fields but seems focused for the moment on medieval history, probably Spain.  (He is also skilled in the use of butcher’s tools, which may somehow play into his interest in medieval military history?)  Ricky is working with Mike Ryan.

Mason Danner grew up in rural Nevada, and apparently not wishing to spend his life in law enforcement (neither CSI nor Reno 911), he earned a BA at UNLV and headed east.  He is interested in US foreign policy and the popular media, which puts him squarely between Pat Hearden and Randy Roberts.

Katherine Darrah majored in both history and anthropology at Purdue.  She studied a semester in Rome (where she learned that Spanish is not exactly Italian).  Her interest lies in the history of Native Americans, and she wants an MA and perhaps a PhD in that field.  Her advisor is Dawn Riggs.

Kirk Fatool earned a BA in history at Bloomsburg University in Pennsylvania.  He is now seeking a masters degree, possibly in African history.  As Ray Dumett is on leave he has not yet selected an advisor.

Angela Ghionea holds two bachelor degrees from Bucharest University, Romania, and an MA in International Relations from the National School of Political and Administrative Studies.  She entered Purdue in the Political Science program and is now transferring to history to pursue her interest in medieval European science, religion, and magic.  She is studying with Mike Ryan.

Carla Glosson took her undergraduate degree at Clark Atlanta University, where she participated in a wide range of research projects dealing with the civil rights movement in the United States.  At Purdue she is seeking an MA and plans to work with Neil Bynum.

Amy Harris earned a BA and an MA in history from Indiana State University in Terre Haute.  She is interested in modern France as well as issues concerning women and gender in the modern era.  She has been awarded a Purdue Doctoral Fellowship.  Her advisor is Whitney Walton.

Bridget Heussler is another in what is becoming a long line of graduate students recruited by Chris Corley, a Purdue PhD teaching at Minnesota State-Mankato.  Not that she’s from Lake Wobegon:  to date she has lived in England, Germany, Austria and Hungary (long-since divided in two), and Australia.  She took her BA at Mankato in 2006 and is seeking an MA in European history, probably working with Charlie Ingrao.

Robert Kirchubel is a retired army officer who now teaches in the Purdue ROTC program and is returning to pick up a masters in history—a project he began many years ago while still in the service.  He has already written two volumes dealing with the Nazi invasion of the USSR during World War II.  His interest is in European military history, and he is working with Charlie Ingrao.

Elizabeth Kuehn earned a BA from Arizona State University in history with a Classical Studies Certificate as well.  She is seeking a masters degree in early modern European social history, working with Jim Farr and Melinda Zook.

Timothy Lombardo comes to us from Temple University in Philadelphia.  He graduated with a BA in history (as well as a secondary certificate in work-studies from the University of Boring Assembly Lines, also in Philadelphia).  His interests lie in American socialism, communism, and other left-wing radical movements, which makes his arrival at conservative Purdue all the more intriguing.  He is working with Nancy Gabin.

Daniel Ludington is another of the many engineering students at Purdue who fall off the wagon and wind up enamored of the liberal arts.  He earned a BA at Purdue and now seeks a masters degree in early modern European social history.  He is working with Jim Farr and Melinda Zook.

Valerie Lynch took her BA at Purdue University-Calumet, majoring in history and earning several honors along the way.  She is especially interested in Russian history in the imperial era and the twentieth century.  She is planning to work with Michael Smith.

Erica Morin is a native (and incurable chauvinist) of the Adirondack region of New York.  She earned her bachelors degree at SUNY-Plattsburgh before coming to Purdue for a masters in American Studies.  She now begins PhD work in the history department, studying environmental history and ecocriticism.  Her advisor is John Larson.

Patrick Pospisek earned a BA in history from North Central College in Illinois and a masters degree from the University of Illinois-Springfield.  He shifted direction after graduate school and went into mortgage banking (no doubt lured by the easy money in that game until recently).  Probably warned in advance that the mortgage bubble was bursting, he is now returning for a PhD in history—where there is no bubble to burst!  His interest is in the early American republic, and his advisor is John Larson.

Michael Rodriguez earned a BA in history with honors at California State University-Stanislaus.  His areas of interest range over American and world history with a focus on post-colonial experiences.  He has not yet identified his major professor.

Bob Sagendorf is pursuing a second career.  He graduated from Purdue many years ago with a degree in history and a teaching endorsement.  After a tour in the navy he took a job with the US Postal Service where he served for 27 years.  After retiring from the post office Bob began teaching at Faith Christian in Lafayette, and he is now seeking an MA in global history.  His advisor is Sally Hastings.

Chris Snively hails from Port Clinton, Ohio (where the mayflies crunch like popcorn underfoot).  He has been in the army and he has been in St. Louis, where he took a Political Science bachelors in the University of Missouri-St. Louis Honors College.  He is now seeking an MA in European history with a special interest in the Balkans.  His advisor is Charles Ingrao.

Other new faces this fall . . .

Rachel Marazzi earned a BA in history from Purdue and is continuing this fall as a non-degree post-bacc. student.  Her areas of interest are American women and social history.

David Rosenfield has a BA in history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and has been working for several years in the field of information technology.  Brought to West Lafayette by the good fortune of his spouse, he will continue as a non-degree post-bacc. in history.  His interest is in early modern Europe.

Pierre Schmitt is here as a graduate exchange student from our partner university Marc Bloch in Strasbourg.  Because of the shameless defections of Elise Dermineur and Dorothée Bouquet, we had to swear on a copy of The Rights of Man that we would send him back to France.  But for now we are delighted to have his company.

Ruth Turpin earned a BS in Electrical Engineering Technology from Purdue-Calumet and began a career in the oil business (a very smart move).  In 2005 she retired from the booming oil business to earn an MA in history (not so smart a move).  Now she is entering Purdue as a non-degree post-bacc. to explore the possibility of getting a PhD and a permanent career as a history professor.  (How smart is that?)  She is interested in European and global history.

Minghao Zhao is here as a graduate exchange student from Peking (Beijing) University in Beijing (Peking), China.  He is the first in what we hope to be a steady stream of exchanges resulting from a new initiative to link Purdue with institutions in China.  We are delighted to have him with us.
