English as a Second Language

PhD Program

While the focus of the Program in ESL at the doctoral level is broad, the faculty brings expertise in second language assessment, second language writing, World Englishes, and applied linguistics studies. This program is unique in that these areas have been tailored to tie in with specific programs within Purdue University. The emphasis in second language writing has close ties to the Program in Rhetoric and Composition in the Department of English; second language assessment is directly linked to the Provost's Office Oral English Proficiency Program; World Englishes emphasis relates to subfields within the Department of English, namely, post colonial literatures, English linguistics, and cultural studies as well as the Interdepartmental Program in Linguistics in the School of Liberal Arts. 

Length of Program: 4-5 years. Students may be full-time or part-time and begin the program at the beginning of the fall or spring semester.

Program Requirements: 60 hours (30 beyond the MA). Competence in a language other than English is required. A thesis and a comprehensive exam are required.

Admission Requirements:  Admission requires a bachelor's degree from a college or university of recognized standing with a GPA of 3.0 or other academic indices of outstanding performance. The program requires GRE scores. Nonnative English speakers must also provide a TOEFL ibt score.
