Information for
Graduate Certificate in ESL
Students currently admitted to a degree program as well as those who are non-degree seeking are eligible to earn a certificate in ESL. Students may complete the certificate independently of their field of study.
The required courses include:

| English 516: | Teaching English as a Second Language: Theoretical Foundations |
| English 518: | Teaching English as a Second Language: Principles and Practices |
| English 565: | Sociolinguistics |
| English 618: | Research Design in Language and Linguistics OR |
| English 629: | Seminar in English as a Second Language OR |
| English 630: | Seminar in Second Language Writing Theory OR |
| English 631: | Seminar in World Englishes |
To fulfill the certificate requirements, a minimum GPA of 3.0 must be attained and a minimum grade of "B" earned for any course that is to be applied to the certificate. All courses must be taken for a letter grade.
A maximum of 6 credits may be transferred from other institutions to meet the requirements of the certificate if the Director of the ESL Certificate Program, upon consultation with the English as a Second Language faculty, approves.
Only courses with a grade of "B" or above and completed within five years prior to the awarding of the certificate will be accepted. Maximum time allowed for completion of the certificate is 5 years.
Courses may be applied for credit toward the completion of more than one certificate. Six (6) hours of coursework taken prior to admission to the Certificate Program may be counted toward completion of the Certificate Program.
Interested students should not begin coursework before submitting an application to the program.
