Debate Team Enjoys Successful Season
The C. Richard Petticrew Speech and Debate Team had many successes this year. The team ranked third in the state at the Indiana Individual Events Tournament held at Purdue in February.

Participation enhances public speaking, and social and professional skills. The
team travels monthly to competitions and meets once a week; coaches meet with individuals several hours a week. The team consists of seven members: Jessica Pasel, Grant Faiks, Jim Medek, Gabe Goh, Keith Gossman, Amber Oliver and Andrew Murray. The coaches are Curt Gilstrap and Stacy Seibert, both graduate students.
Rankings at the state tourney included:
- Andrew Murray, fourth place in informative speaking;
Keith Gossman, extemporaneous speaking, National Parliamentary Debate Competitor.
- Jessica Pasel, third place in prose, fourth place in programmed oral interpretation, third place in persuasive speaking, Interstate Oratory Contestant;
- Amber Oliver, first place in informative, fourth place in poetry, National Parliamentary Debate Competitor.
- Grant Faiks, third place in extemporaneous speaking, fifth place in rhetorical criticism, third place in impromptu speaking, National Parliamentary Debate
Competitor;
Four members traveled to the National Parliamentary Debate Tournament in Colorado: Medek, Faiks, Oliver and Gossman. While no member broke into the elimination rounds, “it was a good learning experience. We were able to compete against good teams from the West that we usually don’t see,” Faiks said.
