Notes
from the Communication Graduate
Student Association

The Communication Graduate Association (CGSA) has had another industrious year! Friday Afternoon Clubs, Performance Hours, "Classroom Heaven & Hell and Other Stuff" (CHAOS) meetings, and semester parties were just a few of the major events CGSA sponsored. Read about CGSA’s involvement in the department and community:

CGSA in the Department!
Our Faculty Representatives
As faculty representatives, Michael Reardon and Devalina Mookerjee attended faculty meetings and reported the proceedings to the CGSA executive committee. The faculty representatives also served as liaisons between the faculty and the graduate student body, presenting any graduate student concerns to the faculty.

Our Graduate Student Representatives
Curt Gilstrap and Cristina Gilstrap served as liaisons between the graduate students, the Graduate Committee and the CGSA board. They met weekly with the Graduate Committee to provide input from graduate students about graduate life in the department.

CGSA in the Community!
Last semester, a small team of graduate students took on the responsibility of designing a volunteer project that used the special skills of the people in the department and made a difference in the community.

Thanks to the dedication of Megan Wise and Jason Combs, the volunteerism team has almost finished a lesson plan that will be used to teach junior high students how they can use communication skills to successfully resolve conflict. You can e-mail Kristen Lucas for more information.

CGSA on the Web!
The Commpedagogy site has been redesigned by Mickey Vorvoreanu and Ying Lin! The same content is now available in an easier, faster-to-use format. Your teaching ideas and class activities are always welcome! A submission form is now available on the Commpedagogy home page.

CGSA Is For You!
CHAOS
"Classroom Heaven & Hell and Other Stuff" (CHAOS) is a CGSA-sponsored forum in which graduate students get together once a month to discuss the nuances, joys and difficulties of teaching for the department. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact Natalie Sydorenko, CGSA vice president.

Performance Hours
Performance Hour became a standard feature of CGSA's repertoire of offerings. The idea of a forum in which communication graduate students, faculty and staff can express thoughts, feelings and ideas seemed to be one that we all liked. Every performance hour saw 10 to 12 people making music/words/forms in wonderful ways! CGSA would like to thank everybody who contributed to making the Performance Hour a success, both those who came to perform, and those who came to cheer and encourage.

The Birthday Club
The Birthday Club received a very positive response from many graduate students. All of the birthdays were shared at the beginning of March so that people could watch out for the big day.
