Alumni Spotlight

Ann NybergAnn Nyberg graduated from Purdue in 1979 with a double major in English and communication, and a minor in business. She didn’t start off in communication; she came to Purdue as a business major. But growing up in South Bend, Ind., her first love had always been writing. As she was walking on campus one day her sophomore year, Nyberg realized that business was not for her and chose to change her major.

Nyberg said that she has been influenced by the whole world. She began digesting everything she could get her hands on, from reading tabloids to watching CNN every night. After graduation, Nyberg began work at WSJV-TV in Elkhart, Ind. She went on to work in Oklahoma for two stations – KOCO-TV and KTVY-TV – and then ended up in Connecticut, the place she has made her home.

Nyberg has anchored the 5, 6, and 11 o’clock newscasts for WTNH-TV, the ABC affiliate in Hartford/NewHaven, for the past 14 years.

Nyberg said that to be in broadcast journalism, “You have got to have it in your blood and in your bones.”

She loves the fact that each day is never the same as the days before. Nyberg had the opportunity to cover the historic trip of Pope John Paul II to Cuba a few years ago. She said that covering that story gave her the opportunity to see things that you only get to see as a reporter.

When asked what she remembered most about Purdue, Nyberg replied: “The friends I had here. I was an Alpha Chi Omega at Purdue and I made many life-lasting friends.” Nyberg knows how important it is to keep good contacts. Her advice to future broadcasters: “Broadcast journalism is such a small world. Be sure that you don’t burn bridges.”
