Glenn Sparks

Professor Glenn Sparks was interviewed by FOX News in Indianapolis about the new Harry Potter movie. Watch the interview here. Sparks was also interviewed by The Wall Street Journal on the issue of technology and communication. Sparks spent a portion of the spring semester at Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium lecturing and doing collaborative research on media effects.

Mohan Dutta
Mohan Dutta, Associate Professor, received a $92,529 grant from the National Library of Medicine (NIH) to fund his project, "Extension of the Genetics Home Reference Consumer Evaluation."
New Hire
Mark Tucker, Associate Professor of Agricultural Communication, with a courtesy appointement in the department. His area of research is risk communication.
 
Publications, Honors and Grants

 

Josh Boyd, Associate Professor, selected as recipient of the Liberal Arts Charles Murphy Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching.

Mohan Dutta, Associate Professor, article on "Civil Society and Publication Relations: Not So Civil At All," received the PRIDE Award for Best Article in 2005 from the Public Relations Division of the National Communication Association. Dutta-Bergman also has been appointed a senior editor of the journal Health Communication. He also was awarded the 2006 Kentucky Conference on Health Communication Lewis Donohew Outstanding Scholar in Health Communication award in recognition for his contributions to the culture-centered approach to health communication.

Robin Clair, Associate Professor, paper "Rhetorical history, contemporary stories:  From Emma Goldman to the United Students against Sweatshops" has been named a "top paper" at the Central States Convention.

Susan Morgan, Associate Professor, gave a keynote speech to the "Communication Summit" of the National Coalition for Donation. The conference was a gathering of public relations and public education professionals who work for organ procurement organizations around the country. Her presentation explored how the entertainment media frames organ donation and how that influences public opinion.

Melanie Morgan, Assistant Professor, selected as department nominee for College of Liberal Arts Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Patrice Buzzanell, Professor, engineering team won the local I2P (entrepreneurship) competition and qualified for nationals.

Brant Burleson, Professor, and Heather Sevaty-Seib, paper "Bereaved Adolescents' Evaluations of the Helpfulness of Support-Intended Statements" named Top Paper for the Interpersonal Communication Division of Central States Communication Association.

Pam Deutsch, Continuing Lecturer, was selected to be part of Purdue's IP Global Partners Program in China.

Jennifer Thackaberry Ziegler, Assistant Professor, was one of four invited speakers at the Safety Seminar of the Fifth International Conference on Forest Fire Research in Portugal.

Steve Wilson, Professor, book "Seeking and Resisting Compliance: Why People Say What They do When Trying to Influence Others," Sage, 2002, won the Book of the Year award from the Social Cognition division of the National Communication Association.Wilson also published, with Wendy Morgan, Ph.D. student, "Goals-plans-action theories: Theories of goals, plans, and planning processes in families" in Engaging theories in family communication: Multiple perspectives, published by Sage.

Marifran Mattson, Associate Professor, CLA Teaching Incentive Grant for her proposal on "Healthcare Campaign Design and Implementation."

Erina MacGeorge, Assistant Professor, CLA Teaching Incentive Grant to support her project on "Gender and Communication Textbook Development."

Pat Rochon, Assistant Professor, $4,736 for the support of a video project to introduce people to the collaborative research catalyzed by the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering (RCHE) at Purdue.

Brant Burleson, Professor, and Graham Bodie, Ph.D. student, 2006 Federation Prize from CSCA.
