Com Day is huge success

Purdue's Public Relations Student Society of America chapter hosted its annual Com Day on Feb. 25 in Rawls Hall.

This event provided attendees with a chance to network with professionals and gain a better understanding of different communication professions.

Representatives from GolinHarris, Verizon Wireless Music Center, Weber Shandwick, Caterpillar, Indiana State Museum, Bradley and Montgomery, Porter Novelli, VMS and Dr. Will Miller, a noted motivational speaker, were presenters for the development sessions.

"I was very impressed with the performance of the students who attended Com Day," said Stephanie Walker, account coordinator at Porter Novelli Chicago. "They asked insightful questions which challenged me to provide valuable answers. I think that this industry is very competitive right now, but the students who spent a Saturday learning the ins-and-outs will have that extra little edge."

The day consisted of three development sessions, during which professionals spoke on a variety of topics from the changing mediums in communication to building relationships in a high-tech age. The attendees could pick and choose which session suited their own interests. Students and faculty had the opportunity to mingle during lunch; students concluded their day at the inaugural Career and Internship Fair.

"Com Day gave me a chance to not only learn more about the industry itself, but also to interact one-on-one with PR professionals and gain their tips for success," said Purdue student Alex Jeffrey.

Com Day has continued to grow, and this year's attendance was up 14 percent.

"Com Day is a great opportunity for PRSSA students to demonstrate their organizational abilities as well as a chance to show off Purdue students to potential employers. The 2006 meeting was a great success any way you measure it," said Howard Sypher, department head.
