Senior VP of Lumina Foundation visits school

James L. Applegate, Sr. Vice President of the Lumina Foundation and former President of the Natonal Communication Association visited the school and Purdue January 25th. Applegate gave a lunch brownbag talk on "Alternative career tracks for communication PhDs."

Scholarships for Undergraduates due February 15th, 2010

Communication Service Award
This $500 scholarship is awarded annually in the spring to a Communication undergraduate major who demonstrates a depth and continuity of service to a project, organization or need during their time at Purdue. (Service provided as part of a class, independent study, internship or job will be given less weight.) The award recognizes a student who has provided sustained service in response to a pressing need at Purdue, in a local community, or in the larger world as opposed to simply performing a laundry list of short-term service activities. Applicants must submit a resume, including GPA; a letter of recommendation from a leader of the organization or project where the student served or a letter from a recipient of the services the student provided; and a one page history outlining the student’s volunteerism with organization/project/need.  Deadline is Feb. 15. To apply, students should go to the Undergraduate section of the Communication website, then to the "Scholarships" section.  Fill in and print out the application form, and submit the form with supporting materials to the main office. Distinguished New Communication Major Scholarship
This $500 scholarship is awarded annually in the spring to a new Communication major. The student must have received A’s in all of his or her pre-communication courses with no retakes. Eligible students must have completed their pre-communication courses by December of the previous calendar year. This award is only available to new Communication majors. Applications are available through the "Scholarships" link from the Undergraduate section of the Communication website. Applicants must also submit a one-page essay on why they chose to major in communication, and an official transcript. The application (filled in and printed out), along with the one-page essay, should be turned in to the main office.  Deadline is Feb. 15. Greg Zawisza Scholarship
This $1000 scholarship is awarded in the spring to a Communication major with an interest in telecommunication.  Applicants must have at least a 3.0 GPA and must seek a career in telecommunication.  Applications are available online and through the "Scholarships" link on Undergraduate section of the main communication website.  Part of the application form asks the applicant to write one paragraph explaining his or her career plans and arguing why he or she would make a worthy recipient.  The application should be turned in to the main office.  Deadline is Feb. 15.  For questions, students should contact Josh Boyd at boyd@purdue.edu.

Fulbright Japan Director visits school

The School of Communication joins Purdue’s International Program Office, the Purdue CIBER and Purdue Confucius Institute in hosting a March 29th visit by David Satterwhite, Executive Director of Fulbright Japan (Japan-U.S. Educational Commission). David has lived in Japan for 38 years and has held positions in academia as well as the corporate sector, both in Japan and in the U.S. He appears frequently on CNBC and BBC Asia and is a program host for iTV Japan, Japan's first virtual television network.  David will do a formal presentation ("The Dynamics, Potential, Challenges, and Opportunities arising from Change in NE Asia - Scholarly and Personal Reflections") at 4pm in Lawson Hall (Room: B 151).

Joint Chiefs of Staff member Admiral Thad Allen visits

Admiral Allen’s visit is co-sponsored by Purdue’s new "Global Policy Research Institute" and Communication Professor Carolyn Curiel’s "Project Impact."   The lecture "Leadership in Crises: Lessons from Katrina and Haiti" will be held Thursday, March 25, 2010 in the South Ballroom of the Purdue Memorial Union at 7:00pm.  Admiral Allen is the Commandant of the Coast Guard, the largest component of the Department of Homeland Security and a branch of the armed forces with  long historic ties to Purdue.  In his 38 years with the Coast Guard, Admiral Allen built a reputation as a decisive, innovative and effective leader, especially in crisis situations.  He became nationally known when he was asked to salvage and lead the federal response to Hurricane Katrina, a successful assignment that preceded his promotion to Commandant.

Mattson receives "Focus Award"

Congratulations to Marifran Mattson who received a "Focus Award for Disability Advocacy" from Purdue.  Professor Mattson was honored in the "Faculty" category.  Mattson began the Motorcycle Safety at Purdue Campaign in the fall of 2006. Marifran has been a major force behind a new law in Indiana that will increase insurance coverage of prosthetics.  As the chair of the Indiana Amputee Insurance Protection Coalition, Mattson worked for House Bill 1140.  This law, which will help current and future amputees, became effective on July 1, 2008. Collins and Morgan awarded Ascension/St. Vincent's grant.

Bart Collins and Melanie Morgan were awarded a grant from Ascension Health and St. Vincent’s for $85,000. The project grant is titled "Evaluating Physician and Patient Attitudes toward an e-Health Technology."

Boyd receives "Murphy Award for Outstanding Teaching"

Josh Boyd has been selected as the winner of the Murphy Award for Outstanding Teaching at Purdue. As many of you know, the award has a cash component ($10,000), plus a $5,000 spending account.  It's the 5th time a communication professor has won in the 44 years the awards existence - the others were Earl Harlan, Charlie Stewart, Cynthia Stohl and Ralph Webb.  Lunch is on Josh!

Collins receives grant from Mayo Clinic

Bart Collins recently received a $300,000 award from the Mayo Clinic's Center for Innovation to study the implementation of ehealth technologies in support of type II diabetes patients.  This is part of a larger 1.2 million dollar award to the Regenstrief Center for Healthcare Engineering (RCHE) looking at patient and provider adherence to evidence based practices.

Burleson designated Redding Faculty Fellow

Brant Burleson has been designated the 2010-2012 Anne and Charles Redding Faculty Fellow in Communication

Buzzanell recipient of Schleman Gold Medallion Award 

Patrice Buzzanell was stunned on Friday when she was ambushed by singing members of Mortar Board (with a few of us looking on!) during a meeting she was attending in Beering...I'm pleased to report that Patrice was serenaded because she is the recipient of this year’s 2010 Helen B. Schleman Gold Medallion Award from the Mortar Board Society, Purdue.  Patrice was nominated by Jennifer Linvill

SJTU Dean visits program

Dr. Guo-Liang Zhang, Dean of the College of Media and Design at Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU) visited the school and Purdue in early June to discuss collaboration opportunities in research and instruction.  SJTU is Purdue’ partner in the Confucius Institute and co-sponsors an annual conference with Purdue’s Communication School that is held in Shanghai each September.

Maura Pierce hired as first "Professional-in-Residence"

Maura Pierce who spent 10 years as a television producer at C-SPAN will be Purdue's first communication "Professional-in-Residence".  In this position, she will teach classes and work with the Purdue Exponent to upgrade the paper's "new media" efforts.  Maura worked more recently as Communication Director for Indiana Court of Appeals and also has experience with a number of media organizations including The Washingtonian.
