Once again, we welcome your comments on the latest issue of The Communicator and hope that you are doing well. It's been another busy summer and fall at Purdue, with a number of alumni and friends back on campus. Several department alumni were selected as Old Masters this year, and we were pleased to welcome them back for visits. There continue to be changes at Purdue, on the campus and in the department. New buildings are going up and the faces of the faculty and staff are changing. Our alumni continue to do great things! Please read through the alumni notes section of this issue of The Communicator. Many of you are doing very exciting things and we wish you continued success.
We have five new faculty colleagues who bring with them a great deal of excitement and energy. Marv Diskin retired … Palm Springs better watch out! Don Burks will be retiring at the end of the spring semester. I am pleased to report that the department programs continue to be nationally ranked and highly regarded. We have new ventures under way on campus and internationally, and we have another great group of graduate students.
At the undergraduate level, we have initiated several new efforts to improve the life of our students. One of our goals this year is to improve the quality of the undergraduate internship program, and we intend to put more resources into this effort. We have reduced the number of majors in an effort to reduce class sizes, and we have significantly improved our television production facilities. We are also working to find new funds to support undergraduate scholarships … the price of a Purdue education continues to go up. We are also in the process of hiring a new faculty member in public relations … an area that always has many students.
We recently hosted a reception in Boston for our graduate student alumni, and we are in the process of a special fund raising effort to support our current graduate students so they can travel to professional meetings and present their research. As you know, this kind of activity is really important.
As the holidays approach, we wish you the best in the forthcoming new year.
