About the Center

Vision: That all adults will adopt and enjoy the benefits from a healthy lifestyle that includes daily physical activity, regular exercise and proper nutrition.

Mission: To be a national leader in the development of exceptional health, exercise and nutrition research professionals and service models which target the enhancement of quality of life and longevity through the interdisciplinary research initiatives of HK, F&N and other university faculty; the preparation of students in their roles as health, fitness and nutrition specialists; and direct services to the Purdue and local communities.

The A.H. Ismail Center for Health, Exercise and Nutrition is a collaborative effort between the departments of Health and Kinesiology and Foods and Nutrition at Purdue University. It was opened in April 1999 but has its roots in the 1960’s with the inception of the Adult Fitness Program. The Center provides faculty a centralized facility for conducting multidisciplinary research in health, exercise and nutrition; students a clinical laboratory for acquiring and polishing technical and leadership skills; individuals a wellness center for achieving and maintaining a maximal degree of health; and the local community a resource for increasing physical activity and exercise participation.

A highlight of our center is the Adult Fitness Program (AFP). In the AFP members can enjoy a relaxed exercise environment filled with modern, state-of –the-art equipment. The membership also provides students with opportunities to practice and refine skills learned in the classroom such as health and fitness testing, exercise prescription, exercise leadership, counseling and management.
